SAVING OUR ENDANGERED AQUATIC SPECIES.

In 2024, an Aquatic Conservation Laboratory opened at Yates Mill County Park.  We will look at the significant contributions that NC State University and the NC Dept of Transportation made to this project, without which this facility may not have been possible.

Single-celled organisms present advantages for genetic engineers at NC State University.  Our visit looks at the cutting-edge research that will improve medical treatment methods and decrease our dependence on antibiotics.

THE WAKE COUNTY PORTION OF THE AMERICAN TOBACCO TRAIL

Wake County covers a 6.5-mile section of this recreational rail-trail in the western part of the county.  We take a ride there to see its tranquil and natural beauty and learn about its cultural history and some of its recreational programs.

OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE (OLLI)

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at NC State and Duke are membership-based organizations that present unique opportunities for adults 50 and older to enjoy a wide range of online and in person learning, special events, study trips, and international trips as well.

ROBERTSON MILLPOND PRESERVE

We plan to soon get our feet wet in the paddling trail at the historic 85-acre Robertson Millpond Preserve near Wendell, one of the newest parks in the Wake County Parks system.  There are opportunities for Fishing and Geocaching there as well.

THE UMSTEAD RESEARCH STATION

One of 18 NCSU-NCDA Research Stations, the Umstead Station was established in the 1940s, and was originally part of the John Umstead Hospital. A special report on this research station was prepared based on notes from staff at that facility.
